2020, the year of pandemic, panic and pandemonium. Who could or would have believed when we went into lockdown in March that life would not change much from then until now? We set up Devlin Fleming Fundraising at the height of the coronavirus storm. For us, it was scary, somewhat terrifying, we were filled with doubts and fears. We can’t say that it has been easy but six months later, we are still here, business is picking up and the support we have offered and provided within the sector has been well received and well thought of.

As we head towards the second half of the year with so much uncertainty within the third sector, we are only too aware that the storm has lessened but not yet passed. We still need shelter, an umbrella or a life raft. We want to continue to offer shelter where we can. And the occasional paddle.

So many organisations are facing an unenviable dilemma - reduce services or cut fundraising and fundraisers. Fundraisers, whether on furlough, facing redundancy or working flat out to fill the gaps in their teams caused by Covid 19, are at the forefront of keeping charitable services going. Not only for the beneficiaries who are assisted but for the donors and supporters who, where they can, are donating what they can when they can.

When we took the decision to organise this conference, it wasn’t one that we did lightly, but one that we felt strongly we should take. We should make this event happen. Why? Well, we hear all the time of the bold and brave decisions fundraisers across Scotland, the UK and worldwide are taking and making to help keep their charities afloat and to continue to provide the vital services their beneficiaries rely so heavily upon. And all this, whilst their income is depleting, their teams are shrinking and a fight for survival continues. No one could have predicted or planned for this – contingencies, reserves are nowhere near large enough to sustain the gap in funding charities face. And it is fundraisers who are manfully attempting to fill that gap.

That’s why we took this step, Devlin Fleming Fundraising is proud to support fundraisers in Scotland and the world over! We know first-hand how difficult it is at present and we want to support you, your team (even if it is the dog) and your organisations. Let’s weather this storm together.

So, our Scottish Fundraising Conference was born and launched. We have, like most people, during this time, been offered help, advice and support for which we are thankful.

And, here, a timely word from our sponsor: -

“Mail Marketing is delighted to be the proud sponsors of the very first Devlin Fleming Fundraising’s Scottish Fundraising Conference 2020. Covid19 certainly has changed the world, and as a result we along with Devlin Fleming Fundraising recognise the need to bring together the Scottish fundraising sector, enabling it to regroup, knowledge share and prepare for the new norm ensuring that your sector can emerge from hibernation stronger and more effectively than ever before. We too believe this is vital if we are to see charities survive and prosper, which is only possible by maximising existing supporter income and the all-important donor acquisition lifeline using the most cost-effective routes to achieve this goal. - Dave Crowther, Director of Sales and Creative, Mail Marketing.
